トヨタ自動車グループの豊田中央研究所(愛知県長久手町)は20日、太陽光、水、二酸化炭素(CO2)のみを使った人工光合成に世界で初めて成功したと発表した。CO2吸収だけでなく、バイオ燃料の生成も可能といい、環境問題の解決策として注目されそうだ。 人工光合成の研究は、1970年代から世界的に進められている。ただ、高濃度の紫外線や、特殊な薬品を使用する必要があり、植物と同様な自然状態での光合成の成功は例がなかった。 今回の研究では、光合成の作用のうち、水を分解して酸素を作り出す反応を半導体に、CO2から有機物を取り出す働きをもうひとつの半導体と特殊な金属に担わせることで「自然状態」での光合成に成功した。有機物として酢酸が生成されるが、アルコール成分などバイオ燃料の生成も可能という。 梶野勉・主席研究員は「CO2を『資源』に活用できる可能性が開ける。エネルギー問題の解決につながれば」と話している。
