Solar activity has a profound influence on our planet. Huge eruptions of charged particles and the emission of intense radiation can disrupt satellite, communication and power systems, and pose a serious health risk to astronauts. Scientists working on SDO say they are thrilled with the quality of the data received so far. "When we see these fantastic images, even hard-core solar physicists like m
Press Release Life on Titan: stand well back and hold your nose! 11-Apr-2010, Plain html version. Royal Astronomical Society Press Release RAS PN 10/18 (NAM 03) Life on Titan: stand well back and hold your nose! Research by astrobiologist William Bains suggests that if life has evolved on the frozen surface of Saturn's moon, Titan, it would be strange, smelly and explosive compared to life on Eart
Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres(出版社:Springerのオランダ支社)にて受理・出版された日英豪米の共同研究です(Fukue et al. 2010 "Extended High Circular Polarization in the Orion Massive Star Forming Region: Implications for
THE footprint of life on Mars may have been plain to see all along in the sulphurous minerals that litter the planet’s surface. What’s more, the next Mars lander should be able to detect the evidence. No mission to Mars has ever found complex carbon-based molecules, from which life as we know it is built. But sulphur is everywhere on Mars – it is more abundant there than on Earth – and it could co
This web page is designed to give everyone an idea of what our universe actually looks like. There are nine main maps on this web page, each one approximately ten times the scale of the previous one. The first map shows the nearest stars and then the other maps slowly expand out until we have reached the scale of the entire visible universe.
Using data from a NASA radar that flew aboard India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, scientists have detected ice deposits near the moon's north pole. NASA's Mini-SAR instrument, a lightweight, synthetic aperture radar, found more than 40 small craters with water ice. The craters range in size from 1 to 9 miles (2 to15 km) in diameter. Although the total amount of ice depends on its thickness in each c
