最近ようやく『ルールズ・オブ・プレイ(上)』という本を読み始めた。ゲームデザインの基礎を著した本として、以前話題になった本だ。ケイティ・サレンとエリック・ジマーマンの共著になるこの本は日本語訳として2011年に刊行され、今年(2013年)に日本語訳の下巻が発売となった。(ちなみに本国アメリカでは2003年に出版された) 今頃読み始めるのは、ずいぶんと周回遅れな感じだが、読んでいる今の感想としてはめちゃくちゃ面白い。僕はゲームを作ったりはしないのだが、プレイヤーの立場で読んでも興味深い事柄が色々と書いてある。そんな僕が、今回、この本を読んでいて、たまたま二人の偉大なゲームデザイナーが同じようなことを言っていることに気がついたので、少し書いてみたいと思う。その二人とは、任天堂の宮本茂氏とボードゲームデザイナーのライナー・クニツィア氏だ。宮本氏は世界的に有名な「スーパーマリオブラザーズ」の産みの
久しぶりのコラムである。ここ最近は記事を思いつくと月刊スパ帝国の方に書いていたのだが、今回は是非とも雑誌を購読していない人に届けたい内容なのでブログに書く。即ち「なんでわざわざボードゲームで遊ぶのか?」という問題である。 ボードゲームはめんどくさい。コンピューターゲームと違って物理的に集まらねばならぬし、準備やら片付けやらが手間だし場所も取る。それにもかかわらずボードゲームで遊ぶ理由とは何だろうか? それは主に3つである: ルールの透明性 コンポーネントの楽しさ 先進的なメカニクス 以下、順に解説しよう。 ルールの透明性 ボードゲームはルールのあらゆる詳細がプレイヤーに明かされている。この行動が成功する確率は何%あるのか? 成功と失敗それぞれの結果は何か? 最終的にどうすると勝ちなのか? こうした戦略判断の基盤になる情報は全てルールブックなりカードなりに書かれている。人力で駒を動かしている
コンシューマーゲームのソフトを購入する基準の1つに、どれだけ長く遊べるか、というものがあります。ゲームの価格は5千円前後から、7千円以上するものも珍しくありませんから、折角買ったのにすぐ終わってしまっては残念に思う人も多いかもしれません。実際、例えば「ポケットモンスター(以下ポケモン)」シリーズや「モンスターハンター(以下モンハン)」シリーズなど、人気のゲームの中には100時間ぐらいのプレイではびくともせず、人によっては500時間、あるいは1,000時間も遊ぶ人もいるようなタイトルがあります。 メーカーの謳い文句としても、「前作を遥かに上回る大ボリューム」「多数のクエスト」「広大なマップ」などなど、ボリューム増加、ひいては長時間遊べるというのをアピールするメッセージはいたるところで目にします。 でも、ゲームのプレイ時間って本当にみんながみんな長い方がいいと思っているんでしょうか? 意外と、
