国立天文台は8月4日、おとめ座の方向に地球から約60光年離れた太陽型の恒星「GJ504」を周回する惑星「GJ504b」を、世界初となる「直接撮像法」で検出することに成功したと発表した。 成果は、東京工業大学、東京大学、国立天文台を中心とする国際共同研究チームによるもの。研究の詳細な内容は、米天文学専門誌「The Astrophysical Journal」2013年8月20日号に掲載される予定だ。 系外惑星の候補天体の数は、2013年7月現在、ケプラー衛星による有力な惑星候補も入れると3500個を越えている。これらのほとんどは、惑星が恒星前面を通過する際の明るさの変化を検出する「トランジット法」や、惑星の公転運動による恒星の速度ふらつきを高精度分光観測で測定する「ドップラー法」など、間接的な観測によるものだ。 一方、系外惑星を直接撮影する「直接撮像観測」は非常に挑戦的な課題である。とりわけ
国立天文台や東京大などは31日、米ハワイ島にある「すばる望遠鏡」に搭載した、新型カメラで初めて撮影したアンドロメダ銀河の鮮明な画像を公開した。 搭載したのは、全長約3メートル、重さ約3トンの巨大デジタルカメラ。画素数は一般的なデジカメの80倍以上ある約8億7000万と高解像度で、画像を拡大しても銀河内の星の一つ一つがはっきりと見える。 従来の7倍という世界最高性能の広い視野を持ち、アンドロメダ銀河のほぼ全体を一度の撮影で捉えることに成功した。 同銀河は、地球から約230万光年先にあり、最も銀河系に近い渦巻き銀河で、直径が20万光年以上ある。見かけが大きいため、地上の大型望遠鏡ではこれまで、全体を一度に撮ることはできなかったという。
国立天文台や総合研究大学院大学などの国際研究チームは8日、誕生から370万年と若い恒星の周囲で、地球のような岩石で出来た惑星のもとになるちりが腕のように伸びている様子を、すばる望遠鏡(米ハワイ島)の赤外線カメラでとらえたと発表した。 惑星誕生の過程を解明する手がかりになるとして注目される。 研究チームが観測したのは、さそり座の方向に470光年離れた太陽と同じぐらいの重さの恒星。周囲を円盤状のちりが取り巻いているが、恒星から約50億キロ・メートル付近はちりの密度が薄く溝のようになっていることが分かった。 理論的な予測では、溝に向かってちりが円盤の内側と外側から腕のように伸び、握手している場所で地球型惑星が誕生している可能性があるとされている。今回は、外側から伸びた腕にあたる部分の観測に成功した。
