カリフォルニア州では今年の秋学期から公立高校が、数学と理科でボランティアの手による無料のデジタル版の教材を採用できるようになる。5月6日(米国時間)にアーノルド・シュワルツェネッガー知事が無料のオープンソース・デジタル・テキストブックを実現するためのイニシアチブ「Free Digital Textbook Initiative」発足を発表した。 これは公立学校の経費節減策の一環で、シュワルツェネッガー知事によるとオープンソース・テキストブックの利用が軌道に乗れば、10,000人以上の高校生を抱える学校区では年間200万ドル規模のコスト削減になる。 もう1つのメリットはスピードだ。公立学校で採用されるテキストブックは州の基準を満たす必要があり、カリフォルニア州は米国の中でも要求レベルが高い。内容は安心できるものの、一方で印刷版のテキストブックの作成から承認までのサイクルが6年と長く、その間の
