GoogleがWebアプリのオフライン化を実現する拡張機能「Gears」を終了し、HTML5への取り組みを強化すると正式に発表した。 米Googleは2月19日、Webアプリのオフライン化を可能にするオープンソースの拡張機能「Gears」をHTML5などのWeb標準に移行し、Gearsの開発は終了すると発表した。 同社が1月にリリースしたWebブラウザ「Google Chrome 4」ではGearsで実現してきた機能の多くをWeb標準でサポートしており、今後のバージョンでさらにGearsの機能をWeb標準のAPIに置き換えていくという。 Gearsは、Googleが2007年5月に「Google Gears」として公開したWebブラウザの拡張機能で、インターネットに接続できない環境でもWebアプリを利用できるようにするというもの。2008年にオープン性を強調するためGearsと名称変更され
