映画『In Silico』(2020年、映画サイト)を見た。一般公開はされていないため、権利者と契約を交わして「バーチャル上映会」を実施する形となった。知り合いに紹介したりソーシャルメディア等で募るなどして、数十人の方に視聴いただいた(2022年3月11~12日に実施)。 その後2022年9月にストリーミング配信が始まり、いつでも見られるようになりました! 22歳の映画監督による「10年プロジェクト」 『In Silico』は、全脳のシミュレーションを目指す科学プロジェクトを追ったドキュメンタリー映画。当時22歳だった映画監督Noah Hutton氏が、2010年から10年かけて取材を続け、映画に仕上げた作品である。2021年には、科学系ノンフィクション作品を対象とした映画賞も受賞している*1。 若きHutton氏をこの10年がかりのプロジェクトに駆り立てたのは、2008年のTEDトークだ

「8Kスーパーハイビジョン」を使ってマウスの脳が活動する様子を撮影することに東京大学などの研究グループが成功し、グループは脳の仕組みの解明などに役立つ可能性があるとしています。 この顕微鏡では従来よりも広い範囲を観察でき、極めて小さい数千のシナプスが一斉に光って情報が伝えられている様子や脳が部分的に働いている様子などが撮影されています。 また、映像を分析すると同時に光るシナプスが多数あり、1つの神経細胞からつながった複数のシナプスが、広い範囲で同時に情報を伝達している様子を初めてとらえたということです。 松崎教授は、「初めて映像を見たときは感動した。脳の中で情報がどのようにやり取りされているのかが詳細に観察できれば、学習や記憶といった脳の仕組みや脳の病気の解明につながる可能性がある」と話しています。
人間の場合には、成長に伴って脳の海馬でのニューロン新生が減り、成年に達すると完全に停止することを報告する論文が、今週掲載される。 ニューロンは電気インパルスを伝える細胞で、海馬内でのニューロン新生は、記憶、気分、ストレス、運動、神経疾患と関連する過程だと考えられている。一部の哺乳類では、成体になっても海馬でのニューロン新生は続き、これまでの研究では、人間の場合も海馬でのニューロン新生が成人期まで続くことが示唆されていた。ニューロン新生の研究は、学習過程、情緒障害、および神経変性疾患の理解を前進させる可能性があると考えられてきた。 これに対して、今回のArturo Alvarez-Buyllaたちの研究では、ニューロン新生がこれまで考えられていたほど長くは続かないことが示唆されている。この研究では、胎児から成人までのさまざまな年齢の被験者から合計59点の脳組織検体を採取し、マーカー抗体を使っ

前書き - 人工知能と脳科学 - 最近のAI (Artificial Intelligence) の進歩はすさまじいですね。特に、深層学習 (Deep Learning) はTensorFlow, Chainerなどのライブラリの普及もあり、一般的に広く使用され、知られる概念になりました。 ところで、Deep Learningの歴史を簡単に紐解いてみると、はじめは脳の計算原理を実装しようとする試み、つまりニューラルネットワーク (Neural Network) の研究からスタートしました。人の脳は100億ともいわれる数の神経細胞からできています。それらは解剖学的に分かれた領域に位置し、それぞれの脳領域は特定の計算を行っています。各脳領域は互いにコミュニケーションを取り合い、行動選択に関わる情報を処理しています。 こうした脳科学の知見は、ニューラルネットワークの研究をインスパイアしてきました
