Mozillaは7月2日(現地時間)、2月に「Open Web Device(OWD)」として発表したHTML5ベースのオープンモバイルプラットフォームの名称を「Firefox OS」とし、同OS搭載の最初のスマートフォンが2013年初頭にTelefonica Brasil(スペインの大手通信キャリアTelefonicaのブラジル子会社)から発売されると発表した。 Firefox OSは、MozillaのオープンモバイルOS「Boot to Gecko(B2G)」をベースにしており、完全にオープンソース化される。オープンなプラットフォームを提供することで、従来の携帯電話と同程度の価格でスマートフォンを市場に投入でき、また、HTML5ベースでWeb標準に準拠していることから、対応アプリの開発を促進できるとしている。 最初の端末は、中国のTCL Communication Technology
