ロシアのシベリアにある氷河期の永久凍土層から、凍った状態のホラアナライオンの子どもが複数体発見された。これほどの保存状態で発見されたのは、同種としては初めて。 公開された写真からは、発見されたホラアナライオンのうち少なくとも1頭は、毛皮までそのまま保存されていたことがわかる。このサンプルは、少なくとも1万年以上この状態だったことになる。 「私の知る範囲では、先史時代のネコ科の動物がこのレベルの保存状態で発見されたことはありません。つまり、これは本当に驚くべき発見です」と言うのは、ネコ科の化石を専門とする米デモイン大学のジュリー・ミーチェン氏だ。 ホラアナライオンは、1810年に初めて文献に登場して以来、ユーラシア大陸や北米大陸でその痕跡が見つかっている。しかし、これまでに発見された化石は、骨と足跡に限られていた。 科学者らは、発見の詳細については口をつぐんでいる。ロシアのサハ共和国
