グーグルが社外のアンドロイドアプリの開発者たちに対し、Gmailの内容を閲覧できる権限を与えているとの報道が浮上した。7月2日、ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル(WSJ)に掲載された記事によると、一部のGmail関連アプリを開発するデベロッパーらが、ユーザーの同意を得た上で、ユーザーのメールの内容を閲覧可能な状態になっているという。 記事によるとアクセス可能なメールは全てのGmailメッセージで、タイムスタンプや受信者のアドレスもAIや人間が閲覧可能になっているという。WSJはグーグルがアプリに表示するユーザーの同意を求める文言が、この事実を十分に明示していないと指摘している。 グーグルはニュースサイト「The Verge」の取材に対し、メール内容へのアクセス権限を与えた開発者はグーグルの審査プロセスを通過した者のみであり、ユーザーからの同意を得た上でアクセスを行なっていると述べた。また、
