火星に地下水がどのくらい存在するかにはさまざまな議論がある。が、少なくとも氷が存在することは過去の探査からハッキリしている。複数の研究者により、水もしくは氷が存在する条件についていくつかのモデルが提案されているが、北半球赤道地域のクレーターにおける地下水湧昇の地質学的証拠を調べた例はほとんど存在しなかったという。 そして、最新の探査機で得られた地形データから、赤道北部のいくつかの深部クレーターには、地下水が存在する可能性が高まっているという。1月に発表された論文(PDF)によると、火星の赤道から北緯37度までにある24個の深いクレーターのうちの15のクレーターにそうした条件に合う場所が存在する模様。条件に合うのは火星の測地基準系からマイナス4000mから5000mの間のクレーターで、水位の変化によって地形が変わった痕跡があるという。 サイエンス・ライターのRobert Zimmerman氏
