アメリカの漫画家ニナ・ペイリーがほぼ独力で作った大傑作アニメーション。インドの叙事詩「ラーマーヤナ」をもとに、恋人に捨てられた女性の悲哀を描いた作品になっている。 インドのラーマ王子は訳あって王国を14年のあいだ追放されることになり、妃のシーターを連れて森のなかに住んでいた。しかしラークシャサ（悪魔）の王ラーヴァナがシーターを気に入り、ラーマが不在のときに彼女を誘拐してしまう。ラーマから放され、嘆き悲しむシーター。そこでラーマは猿の大群を率いてラーヴァナのもとに攻め入り彼を倒し、無事にシーターを奪還して王国へと帰還する。しかしその後すぐにシーターが妊娠したことから彼女の不貞が人々のあいだで噂されるようになり、それを気にしたラーマによってシーターは再び森のなかへと追放されてしまう…というようなお話。 本編はインドの伝統画のスタイルで語られ、それに絡めて1920年代の歌手アネット・ハンショウに
