アンドリュー・ゲルマンが、過去10年間の連邦政府の常勤雇用の増分のうち9割は国土安保省だった、と書いたマイケル・マンデル*1を批判し、コメント欄でマンデル本人から返り討ちに遭っている。 ゲルマンは、雇用変化にはプラスもマイナスもあるのだから、それを通算した数字に占める割合を論じても意味が無いだろう、と批判したのだが、それに対しマンデルは、対象となる雇用増分の主要内訳はいずれもプラスが僅かなマイナスなので、この場合はそうした割合を論じることが意味を持つ、と反論している。 加えてマンデルは、ゲルマンの指摘するような問題は自分は熟知しており、まさにそれだからこそ、かねてより米国GDPの7割は消費という議論を攻撃してきたのだ、と書いている。というのは、GDPには輸入という大きなマイナス項目があるからである。ゲルマンがこの問題を取り上げるならば、より一般に浸透しているそちらの誤解を批判対象とするべき
