オープンソースのジュークボックスソフト「Songbird」のコンセプト実証版、バージョン0.1が公開された。ダウンロードされるファイルは英語版となっているが、ソフトウェアのヘルプメニューから、言語をJapaneseに設定することで、日本語メニューに変更できる。 SongbirdはFirefoxのブラウザエンジンを使ったソフトで、開発者であるPioneers of Inevitableでは、「次世代のメディアプレーヤーを目指している」という。対応フォーマットはMP3、AAC Ogg Vorbis、FLAC、WMAほか。 ただし、現在はこのソフト独自のコードはまだ少なく、VLCやXUL Runnerといったソフトのコードが含まれている。ライセンス自体はGPLの第2版に準拠したものとなっている。 iTunesとの類似点は、巻き戻し、再生、早送りボタンの配置、スマートプレイリストの検索条件など多数
