フィンランドの7月の出生数（速報）が44か月連続で前年同月比マイナスとなった。1～7月累計では前年同期比-6.3%で、通年でも2018年を下回ることがほぼ確実である。 2018年の出生数は過去180年間で大飢饉の1868年に次ぐ少なさであった。1/7を占める移民系の母親によるものを除くと1868年を下回っている。 合計出生率（TFR）も過去最低の1.41で日本の1.42を下回った。 2010年代に若い世代の出生率が急落している。 TFRの低下には、閉経するまでに産んだ子供の平均人数（コーホート完結出生数）が前の世代よりも少なくなるquantum効果と、出産年齢を遅らせることによる一時的低下のtempo効果がある。フィンランドでは、19世紀末から20世紀半ばにかけての5→2への低下はquantum効果で、大飢饉の1868年や内戦の翌年の1919年の低下はtempo効果である。 1973年の1
