先週末から世界の中東専門家の耳目がワシントンに集まった。3月5日、米国のバラク・オバマ大統領がイスラエルのベンヤミン・ネタニヤフ首相と会談を行ったからだ。 もちろん最大の関心はイラン核開発問題。6日、英語で書かれた関連記事をグーグルで検索したら、何と4337件ものヒットがあった。 ところが、同時に日本語で書かれた記事を検索したらわずか78件。悲しいかな、日本での関心の低さを象徴するような数字だ。 しかも、内容を読んで思わず絶句した。失礼ながら、ワシントンの日本人特派員の中東理解とはしょせんこの程度なのだろうか。今回は米・イスラエル関係報道の読み方を考えたい。 相も変わらぬステレオタイプ報道 まずは筆者が唖然とした見出しと報道内容の例をいくつか挙げてみよう。 ●イスラエル、イラン攻撃否定せず 自制求める米大統領に イスラエルのネタニヤフ首相は、イラン攻撃に自制を求めたオバマ大統領に対し「イス
