大ペンギンの化石発見！昔は人と同じ背の高さだった!?
ペンギンの中で最も大きいのは、南極大陸の周辺に生息するコウテイペンギンだ。立ち上がったときの高さが、高いもので130cmほどになる。 130cmといえば人の子供くらいの背丈。結構な大きさと言えるが、最近ニュージーランドで化石として見つかった大ペンギンと比べると、まだまだ可愛いものだ。 大人と肩を並べる大昔のペンギン 発見されたペンギンの化石は、今からおおよそ6千万年前のもの。掘り出された化石から当時の姿を復元すると、身長（立ち上がったときの背丈）が約160cm、体重は80kgになるという。 6千万年前といえば、恐竜が絶滅して間もない頃。数種類の大ペンギンが繁栄したと考えられており、今回見つかった化石はそのうちの1種ということになる。 化石の詳しい調査結果は論文としてまとめられ、オーストラリアの古生物学術誌「Alcheringa」に発表されている。 Canterbury Museum 海竜類
