私は地元の図書館をサポートする古書店でボランティアをしている。私の仕事の一つに、寄贈された書籍の仕分けがある。5年以上前のコンピューター書籍の場合、販売用(ペーパーバックは50セント、ハードカバーは1ドル)に保存する、ほかの図書館の古書店に送る、無料で持ち帰り可能なカートに入れる、リサイクルに回す、のいずれかの処理になる。 時にはリサイクル用の回収箱から古紙扱いするべきではない書籍を救出することもある。最近では「PostgresSQL Essential Reference (2002)」と「Programming Perl (1996)」を救出している。これらはもう用なしの書籍だろうか。もちろんスペースに余裕はないのだが、こういった書籍を仕分けるのにどのような基準をあてはめればよいだろうか。
