かつてWindowsがUNIXを打ち負かすことができたのは、言ってみればUNIX戦争による漁夫の利だった。Linuxではそうはいかない。 12年前、PC Magazine誌でPC UNIXの特集を監修し、担当編集チームのメンバーとともにConsensys、Dell、Interactive、SCO、Univel、Sun、NeXTのUNIXをレビューした。 レビュー対象外ではあったがUHC、Microportなど、ほとんどの人が名前も知らないような会社のUNIXにも目を向けた。 今では、そのうちのほとんどの会社がなくなっている。いまだにUNIX事業を展開しているのはSunとSCOの2社だけだ。 何が起きたのだろう?
