1910年、東京府生まれ。学習院中等科、東京高等学校を経て、1933年、東京帝国大学理学部物理学科を卒業する。在学中に理化学研究所で寺田寅彦の指導を受ける。1933年、フランス政府留学生として渡仏、パリでド・ブロイに師事し、熱力学の第二法則と波動力学の研究を始める。1937年、ライプツィヒに移り、ハイゼンベルクに原子核理論を師事する。同年、後にドイツ文学者でハワイ大学教授となるドロテア・ダウアーと結婚する。 1939年、第二次世界大戦の勃発とともにドイツを離れ、コペンハーゲンのボーアの許にしばらく滞在した後、同年12月に家族とともに帰国する。以降、理化学研究所員、東京帝国大学第二工学部助教授、立教大学理学部教授を歴任し、第二次世界大戦後の1950年に渡米。 1956年、IBMワトソン研究所員となり、量子力学を基礎とする独自の情報理論の構築とその応用研究を行う。以降、イェール大学教授、ハワイ
