  • BBC NEWS | Middle East | Israel strikes key Hamas offices

Israeli air raids have pounded the Gaza Strip for a third day, hitting key sites linked to militant group Hamas. Gaza's interior ministry and Islamic University were the latest targets. Hamas says 312 Palestinians have died since Saturday, of which the UN says 57 were civilians. In Israel, a second person was killed by a militant rocket. Defence Minister Ehud Barak said Israel was not fighting the

vmconverter: jacony: carandache: browneyes: jhnbrssndn: robot-heart-politics: craytonc:livesophia: Over 300 Palestinians have died, nearly 60 of them civilians. More than 1400 have been wounded. Two Israelis have died. Three more were wounded. Anyone who argues that this is an appropriate and just response doesn’t know how to count. But how many have been killed in all of the attacks leading up to this that Israel has not responded to? Hamas have bombed the Israeli people how many times - including during times of cease-fire? They are a terrorist organization, one that espouses hatred and genocide against the Israeli people. They hide among civilians, and attack civilians. For that, I applaud the Israeli’s for finally taking the fight to them. One cannot deal logically with a group such as the Hamas. Time and time again they have shown that to them, the only solution is the destruction of Israel and the extermination of the Jewish population. The only solution to terrorism,is to destroy such a cancer. Israel has said that their goal in not less than making sure that Hamas cannot launch any more rockets against their people. I find that goal to be short of where it needs to be, but agree that at the minimum it is satisfactory. Some numbers you should probably be aware of: In the past 8 years, a little over 100 Israeli children have been killed in this ongoing conflict. Over 1,000 Palestinian children have been killed. 1,000 Israelis overall have been killed, but 4,800 Palestinians have been killed. 8,000 Israelis have been injured…but 33,000 Palestinians have been injured. I do not buy the argument that Israel is blameless. There is a long record of Israel’s inhumane treatment of Palestinians. They continue to build and occupy illegal settlements which they have sworn to their own people, to Palestinians, and to the whole world that they are abandoning. Many of the attacks Palestinians have launched on Israelis is on land that is rightfully, legally their own, by treaties that Israel claims to recognize and respect. We call what the Palestinians do “terrorism” because we have denied them a legitimate government or voice. Hamas is their elected government which Israel, Europe, and America refused to recognize, and therefore call it illegitimate and a terrorist organization. But it is a government which views itself as fighting for its people. This is not to argue that the Palestinians are right. However, to self-righteously proclaim that what Israel is doing is just…just according to what? They have not been reciprocal in the force they have used against militants and civilians alike. They have not followed the laws of their own land or of the civilized world. They have refused to acknowledge the democratically elected government of the Palestinian people because they don’t like whom the Palestinians voted for. Where in this are any of the principles which we should defend or applaud? What they have done has consistently been illegal, inhumane, and undemocratic. This doesn’t defend what Palestinians or Hamas have done in return, but spare me the congratulatory speeches about how good and wonderful Israel has been and how justified they are in what they are doing. What they are doing is slaughtering a people who have not the power to fight back with any kind of equal force, and they are doing so in a wholesale pursuit of archaic religious beliefs — not based on any law existing today, including ones they themselves claim to follow to the rest of the world. They are no more or less fanatical in their beliefs than the Muslim Palestinians they fight, and they are no more or less justified in their violence. I have no idea how anyone can possibly find anything about this situation that is for either side satisfactory, and I can only hope that it is your ignorance that leads you to your conclusion — not your sense of humanity.
