１８日午後６時１２分ごろ、熊本県南部の九州自動車道八代インターチェンジ（ＩＣ）と熊本ＩＣ間の上り線を「軽乗用車が逆走している」と１０件近い１１０番通報があった。パトカーが急行したところ、車は途中のパーキングエリア（ＰＡ）付近に停車していた。逆走は１７キロに及び、トンネルが連なる九州道でも事故の多い「難所」だったが、幸い事故にはならなかった。 県警高速道路交通警察隊によると、運転していたのは福岡県大牟田市内の女性（７９）。熊本県氷川町の宮原サービスエリアに立ち寄った後、上り線を走行方向とは逆の下り方面に向かった。主に追い越し車線を走り、八代ＩＣを過ぎ、坂本ＰＡ付近で停車。パトカーが坂本ＰＡに誘導した。女性は「ここはどこね」などと話していたという。
