Microsoft Corporationは、Windows Vistaで「MS ゴシック」「MS 明朝」などの日本語フォントに施された変更を、Windows XP/Server 2003に適用するためのフォントファイルを公開した。現在、同社のホームページからダウンロードできる。 Windows Vistaでは、日本語フォントの収録文字における基準として、2004年に策定された最新のJIS規格である“JIS X 0213:2004”（以下、JIS2004）を採用している。このJIS2004では、Windows XP以前の収録文字と比較して、第3、第4水準漢字などが追加されたほか、一部の文字では字形が変更されている。 これらの変更は、Windows Vista用の新フォント「メイリオ」だけでなく、「MS ゴシック」「MS P ゴシック」「MS UI Gothic」「MS 明朝」「MS P 明

シンプルな字体で使いやすいゴシック体の日本語フォント「Ume Gothic」v0.367が、4日に公開された。Windowsに対応するフリーソフトで、編集部にてWindows XPで動作確認した。現在、作者のホームページからダウンロードできる。 「Ume Gothic」は、フリーのフォント「さざなみゴシック」のひらがな・カタカナ・英数字や、よく使われる漢字を独自のフォントに置き換えたゴシック体フォント。「Ume Gothic」のほか、プロポーショナル版の「Ume P Gothic」「Ume UI Gothic」と、「さざなみ明朝」の字体や字間を調整した「HC Sazanami Mincho」「HCP Sazanami Mincho」の計5種類が1つの配布ファイルに同梱されている。 「Ume Gothic」の字体は、「MS ゴシック」などでは少し右上がりに描かれる、ひらがなの『き』『ま』など
