映画の第一印象を決定し、その映画の評判すら左右してしまうほどの力を持つタイトルバック映像。Imaginary Forcesの「Se7en」や Nexus Productionsの手がける「キャッチ・ミー・イフ・ユー・キャン」など、今でこそ趣向の凝らされたタイトルバックが当たり前になったが、昔は単にクレジットの羅列であった。そこにデザインとクリエイティビティを初めて入れ込み、創意工夫に溢れる映像を作り上げたのがニューヨーク出身のグラフィック・デザイナー、Saul Bass（ソール・バス）。 彼こそがヒッチコックの「めまい」、「サイコ」など20世紀を代表するタイトルバック映像を数多く手がけ、映画史に金字塔を打ち立てたデザイナー。現在活躍するデザイナーの間でも、彼からの影響を公言する人も多い。そんなバスの映像世界が見られるDVD作品「ソール・バスの世界」が、現在発売中だ。 ■日本未ソフト化の映画
