小学三年生になる息子は今、算数の授業で割り算・かけ算を習っているんだけど、 どうも納得いかないのが表題の件。 今日も息子の宿題の添削をしていると、0で割っている問題があった。 ああ、この問題を見た瞬間、添削する手が止まってしまうんだよなー。 0で割るって出来ないよな?? そう思いながら、答えの欄に書かれている「問11の答え:0」に目をやり、少しガッカリしながら丸を書く。 すると、そんな私の様子に気がついた息子が近付いてきた。 どうやら自分が解いた答えが間違ってたのかと勘違いしたらしい。 違うんだ。そーじゃないんだよ。 答えは合っているんだけどね、そもそも問題が変なんだよ・・・。 息子が授業で習っているということは、 ひょっとしたら私の考えが間違っているのか、それとも数学界に異変が起きたのか。 だんだん不安になってきたので、このブログを書きながらWindowsに入ってる電卓を叩いてみた。 ど
先日、「大数の法則と中心極限定理を恋愛小説風に語ってみる」 というおちゃらけ記事を書いたが、それにはきっかけがあった。 それは、数学のできない大学生のことだ。 私がいるWS大(学部)は入学が易しい。 出願者の母集団は米国のごく平均的な高校生だと思われるが、 その約80%に入学許可を与えている。 大学は入学した全ての学生に対して 数学を最低1科目履修する事を義務付けているので、 かなり数学が苦手な学生も何らかの科目を履修することになる。 私は昨年、そうした数学が苦手な学生向けのコースを受け持った。 学生の数学的知識は、日本の公立中学3年生と同じくらいであったように思う。 公立中学と同じように、できる子は結構できるし、 できない子は平面上の直線の式も覚束ないという感じで、バラツキも結構大きい。 ちなみに、日本では「分数ができない大学生」というのが昔話題になったことがあったが、 アメリカの簡単な
