学習指導要領は1980年代後半から会話重視を唱えてきたが、なかなか効果が上がらない。コミュニケーション能力とは何なのか。立教大学で異文化コミュニケーション論を教える鳥飼玖美子特任教授に、今回の改定への評価も含め話を聞いた。 ――改定をどう見るか。 「英語のインプットが多くなるのはいいが、英語で授業すればめでたしかというと、そうではない。問題はコミュニケーションと文法が相反するものと捉えられていること。文章を組み立てたり、丁寧な言い方にしたり、コミュニケーションするなら文法力は必須だと肝に銘じてほしい」 「ある学生が『仮定法なんて会話で使わないのに、受験に出るから仕方なく勉強した』と。でも、英語で夢を語ろうと思ったら仮定法を使うし、会社に入って取引先と交渉する時も丁寧表現には仮定法を使う。会話のパターンを覚えるだけでは応用がきかない。英語のシャワーを浴びているだけでは話せるようにならない」

1.どこまで厳密に仕様書を書くべきか? オフショア開発の先駆け本である『オフショアリング完全ガイド―ソフトウエア開発([著]S‐openオフショア開発研究会:2004年 日経BP社)』によると、日本企業が感じるオフショア開発の問題点として、およそ13%の企業が「仕様伝達や変更が困難」を挙げています。ただ、その一方で、受注する海外企業の約29%が「日本側の仕様確定・変更が大きな問題である」と感じています。 この問題の主な原因は、「ドキュメントの表現が曖昧」「仕様が不明確なまま開発を開始する」などに起因します。今回は、日本側が書いた仕様書が曖昧になる原因を取り上げます。 2.仕様書の行間を読む 読者の皆さんの中には、海外発注するソフトウェアの仕様書をどこまで厳密に書くべきかで悩んでいる方も多いのではないでしょうか? 日本側からよく聞く話として、「外国人エンジニアは仕様書の行間を読んでくれない」
「英語の人称」について問題提起を行なうようにとのことですが、英語は外国語とは言え、ドイツ語やロシア語などとは違い、ここにいらっしやる皆さん全員が解る言語ということで、適当に煙に巻くということもできず多少ともハンディーがあり、役回りとしては少なからず損な役回りである――これが、今回シンポジウムの問題提起者をお引き受けした時の私の率直な感想でした。 伺ったところでは、最初はほかの英語の先生に対して問題提起者の打診があったそうですが、その先生は「英語の人称は、I,we,you,he,she,it,they――それだけのことですよ」とお答えになりお断りになった。その経緯で私のところにお鉢が回ってきたという事の次第はともかく、こと左様に、英語の人称などというものは極めて自明なことであって、殊更に言挙げするほどの事がらではない、というのが(私自身を含めて)英語の教員全般の感想ではないかという気がしま
「表音文字?表意文字?」皆さん、これらを耳にしたことはございますか?これに関してENGLISH NOW!のHP内ではこのように記しています。 「多くの外国語の文字は発音と綴りが一致していません。このため外国語には「発音記号」というものが存在するのです。(表音文字)ところが、日本語のひらがなでは綴りと発音記号が完全に一致しています。そのお陰で、私たちは知らない単語でも正確に発音することができます。これは外国語にはあり得ないことです。 更に漢字においては、読めない文字もその「つくり」から意味の推測が可能です。 そう、私たちの脳は「文字と音が一体化」しているのです。(表意文字)そんな構造を持つ言語を母国語としているためでしょう、私たちが外国語を習い始めると、挨拶すら「言えない」うちから、せっせと文字と綴りを覚えたがります。」 そうなんです、実は私たちの使用しているこの「日本語」とは「表意文字」と
いまさら、日本語が表意文字を使い、英語が表音文字を使っている、などと言ったところで、皆さんは、ハイハイわかってますよ、ということだろう。 本当にわかっているのだろうか?私は心もとない。 私はここにこそ、日本人が英語を苦手とする根本原因がある、と思うのだ。 日本人は英語がにがてだ。それには、二つ原因がある。一つは英語が音声を媒介として意味を伝える言語だということ。二つには、文章では、語順が意味を表す決定的な要素だ、ということだ。 音声を媒体としている、ということは、英語では文章を読んだとき、まず、頭の中で文章の音が流れ、初めて意味を理解する、ということだ。けして単語の綴り字を見て意味をキャッチするのではない。だから本は初めは声を出して読んだほうがいいかもしれない。いうまでもなく、本を読むより先に人の声で意味を取る練習から入ったほうが更に良いのだ。 日本の英語教育はどうなんだろう?まづ、英語の
世界を旅して、写真を撮り、オンライン英会話スクールを運営中。現在、ブエノスアイレスに滞在してスペイン語を勉強中。ソーシャル・ビジネスを理念とした会社を起業しています。 日本に住んでいる限り、英語を話す必要性は全くない。だからこそ、楽天とユニクロの英語公用語化に関してはとても懐疑的だ。 だが、世界を見渡すと、英語を話せないと話にならないのは確かな事実だ。アジアやヨーロッパを訪れても、「君の英語うまいね」などと言われることはない。なぜならば、英語を話せることはもう当然のことであり、誰もそんなことで驚いたりしないからだ。 英語を話せないと、海外に行っても必然的に日本人同士でつるむことになり、それはそれで楽しいかもしれないが、その他大勢の外国人と知り合う機会を逸することは旅の醍醐味を大きく損なってしまうことも事実である。 この世界の現状を見渡して、「英語を話す必要は全くない」と言い切れる人はいない
