今年の3月、伝説の先生をアメリカに訪問したときのことです。東海岸にある、この有名大学のキャンパスを先生が自ら案内してくださいました。 キャンパスの中心に近い場所に車を駐車した先生は「mehori さん、荷物は車の中に置いていった方がいいですな!」と私に声をかけました。 「え、ええ。わかりました」と、不思議に思いながら荷物を置いてドアをしめると、先生はなぜだか準備運動をしています。 「ではいいですか。行きましょう!」と一声かけると、先生は猛ダッシュで走り始めました。 「(え、ええーっ!?)」と声にならない叫びをかみ殺しながら、私は必死で付いてゆくほかありませんでした。 「案内」というのはご自身の習慣であるランニングのついでだったのです。冷たい雨が降り始める中、それから45分の間、「ここが数学の研究棟です!」「ここがスタディアムです!」「ここが学生寮です!」と息せき切った案内が続いたのでした。
