美の巨人たち
昭和初期、日本初のシュールレアリスム絵画と言われた作品、古賀春江・作『海』。 1929年に描かれたこの作品は、不思議に明るい印象を与える。空にはカモメと飛行船、そしてドイツの飛行船ツェッペリン号。 海を自由に泳ぎ回る魚と一緒に描かれているのは最新鋭の潜水艦。 帆船が海面に浮かび、何を示しているのか手を挙げる水着を着た謎の外国人美女。空と海と陸とが融合し、描かれたモチーフはすべて同じ空間に存在している。それでいて奇妙に調和した空間をつくり上げている。 時代の先端を走り続けた画家、古賀春江は、春江という名前だが、じつは男性。古賀は1895年、福岡県久留米市の古刹が建ち並ぶ街の一画にある浄土宗善福寺に生まれた。 彼は青春時代、いつも焦っていた。都会では新しい時代へと急速に動き出していたが、福岡では何も変わらない。1912年、17歳の古賀は周囲の反対を押し切って、憧れの東京へと上京する。
