ウェブブラウザ「Firefox」を提供している非営利組織Mozillaが、意図した宛先以外の人に読まれてしまう心配をせずに、ウェブ上でメッセージを送れるようになる新サービスを始めた。 このサービスは「Codemoji」と呼ばれ、使い方は実に簡単だ。ユーザーはまずCodemojiのウェブサイトへ行って、120文字以内のメッセージを入力する。あとは、そのメッセージを解読する際のキーとして働く絵文字を1つ選ぶだけだ。 Mozillaでは、暗号化技術の仕組みを学んでもらうための一助として、このCodemojiを作ったと説明している。Mozillaのエグゼクティブディレクター、Mark Surman氏は発表の中で「暗号化の仕組みを知り、なぜ自分たちにとって重要かを理解している人が増えれば、いざというときに暗号化を守るために立ち上がろうとする人も、それだけ増えるはずだ」と述べた。加えて同氏は、世界中の
Mozillaは6月29日（現地時間）、暗号化の仕組みを楽しく理解するための絵文字クイズ「CODEMOJI」を公開した。 ページを開くと暗号（chiper）の基本である、文字を別の文字に置き換える仕組みの説明が始まり、CODEMOJIは文字の代わりに絵文字で置き換えるというルールの紹介がある。 説明を最後まで読んで「I understand」を押すと自分で文章（日本語など2バイト文字には対応しない）を入力し、暗号化に使う鍵になる絵文字を1つ選ぶ画面になる。
