■はじめに 日本語の書き言葉は、平仮名、片仮名、漢字など文字の種類が多いだけではなく、数字も算用数字（いわゆるアラビア数字）と漢数字を使い分け、ローマ数字を使う場合もあります。アルファベットの世界はもう少し簡単なのではないかと想像しがちですが、数の表現方法に関しては必ずしも一筋縄ではいかないようです。 私が仕事の上で毎日接しているフランス語を例にとると、数の書き方には大きく３つの方法があり、個々のケースではどの書き方にするか迷うことも多いのです。 アラビア数字で書く これは、数値や番号を列挙したり比較したりするときに普通に使われる数の表記方法です。 綴り字で書く（例えば“21”と書かずに“vingt et un”と書く） 数を名詞として使う場合や、「半分」“demi”、「四分の一」“quart”、「正午」“midi”などの単語と組み合わせて表現する場合など、いくつかの文脈で
