Early results from a Nasa mission designed to test two key predictions of Albert Einstein show the great man was right about at least one of them. It will take another eight months to determine whether he got the other correct say scientists analysing data from Nasa's Gravity Probe B satellite. The spacecraft was launched into orbit from California, US, on 20 April 2004. The mission's chief scient
Bininda-Emonds OR, Cardillo M, Jones KE, MacPhee RD, Beck RM, Grenyer R, Price SA, Vos RA, Gittleman JL, Purvis A. The delayed rise of present-day mammals. Nature. 2007 Mar 29;446(7135):507-12.

Introduction Many of the articles on this Web site are versions of the Fermi Problem described in the first section. Others are essays - some short, some long. Some are merely attempts to come to terms with basic concepts, such as the 'size' of the speed of light or the number 'one trillion'. Others discuss more advanced concepts. The last few essays involve college-level physics, and might be dif
The Anne and Bernard Spitzer Hall of Human Origins pairs fossils with DNA research to present the remarkable history of human evolution. The hall covers millions of years of human history, from early ancestors who lived more than six million years ago to modern Homo sapiens, who evolved 200,000 to 150,000 years ago. This innovative exhibition combines discoveries in the fossil record with the late
English, Irish, Scots: They’re All One, Genes Suggest Britain and Ireland are so thoroughly divided in their histories that there is no single word to refer to the inhabitants of both islands. Historians teach that they are mostly descended from different peoples: the Irish from the Celts, and the English from the Anglo-Saxons who invaded from northern Europe and drove the Celts to the country’s w

Last Updated: Wednesday, 20 September 2006, 17:05 GMT 18:05 UK The 3.3-million-year-old fossilised remains of a human-like child have been unearthed in Ethiopia's Dikika region. The female Australopithecus afarensis bones are from the same species as an adult skeleton found in 1974 which was nicknamed "Lucy". Scientists are thrilled with the find, reported in the journal Nature. They believe the n
