Google Earthで「街おこし」――自治体向けに3D化促進プログラム立ち上げ
米Googleは3月4日、自治体向けのプログラム「Cities in 3D Program」を立ち上げた。各自治体が所有する「3Dモデリング」データの、Google Earth上での公開を促すためのプログラム。Google Earthでの3Dモデルの公開は、これまでもGoogle 3D Warehouseを通じて行えたが、今回のプログラムはこれを一歩進めたもので、より大容量のデータを効率的にGoogle Earthに公開する手段を提供するものだという。 Googleは、3Dモデルを一般公開することの利点として、土地利用や再開発、史跡保存計画などに市民の関心を集められることや、企業の誘致、観光の促進などを挙げ、プログラムへの参加を勧めている。 プログラムの詳細はWebサイトに掲載されている。
