猫が喉を鳴らさなかった
一年前、飼い猫がとある病で生死の境をさまよった。 医師には生きられる保障は無いときっぱり断言され、飼い主である私の落ち度を呪いながら三日三晩寝ずの看病。 明けて4日目、ついに猫は峠を越した。 体重は元気な頃の半分以下まで落ちたが、それでも日に日に食欲は増しもう大丈夫だと思っていた時ふとある変化に気づいた。 猫が喉を鳴らさない。 元来まるで犬のようだと言われるほどに懐こい猫で、その件がある以前はそっと撫でるだけでも喉を鳴らした。 ふつふつと湧くような低く甘いその音が私は大好きで、だから用もないのに家にいるときは猫を撫でた。 しかし元気になってからと言うもの、猫はさっぱり喉を鳴らさない。 撫でれば以前同様とても嬉しそうにするし、帰宅すれば足にまとわりついてかまえかまえと大騒ぎする。 定期健診でも血液の数値は安定し心身ともに元気になったはずなのに。 なんとなく、猫が私をゆるしていないのでは無いか
