Facebookとミラノ大学が7億2100万人のユーザーのネットワークを調べたところ、ユーザー同士は平均で4.7人目でつながっていることが明らかになった。 Facebookでは人々は「六次の隔たり」より少ない「四次の隔たり」でつながっている――。米Facebookが11月22日（現地時間）、7億2100万人のユーザーを調査した結果を発表した。 「六次の隔たり（six degrees of separation）」とは、世界中の任意の2人は、赤の他人であっても知人の知人というような知り合いの連鎖の中で5人程度の仲介者によって間接的につながっているという考え。こうした考えは、ハンガリーの作家カリンティ・フリジェシュが1929年に発表した短編小説が初出といわれる。米国の社会心理学者スタンリー・ミルグラム氏が1967年に行った「スモールワールド実験」では、平均で5.5人が仲介によってつながっていた
