米Facebookのマーク・ザッカーバーグCEOは8月20日(現地時間)、現在インターネット環境を持たない世界中の50億人をネットにつなげることを目標とする世界的な共同体「Internet.org」の立ち上げを発表した。 同氏によると、現在インターネットを使っているのは世界人口の約3分の1に当たるわずか27億人。Internet.orgでは、残りの3分の2の人々に等しくインターネット環境を提供する目的で集まったパートナーが、ツール、リソース、ベストプラクティスを共有することにより、手頃な料金、効率、ビジネスモデルという3つの分野で解決策を探すという。 立ち上げ段階でのパートナー企業(アルファベット順)は、スウェーデンEricsson、台湾の半導体メーカーMediaTek、フィンランドNokia、ノルウェーOpera、米Qualcomm、韓国Samsung Electronicsの6社だ。
