希少種フクロネコ、毒ガエルを食べないことを「学習」 豪
オーストラリア・シドニーにある動物園「ワイルドライフ」で、フクロネコの赤ちゃんを抱く飼育員の女性（2011年11月3日撮影、資料写真）。(c)AFP/GREG WOOD 【4月26日 AFP】オーストラリアの科学者らは、絶滅の危機にある柔らかい毛に包まれた有袋動物、地元で愛されているフクロネコが毒性のあるヒキガエルを食べないように訓練している。捕食者である肉食動物の数を激減させているヒキガエルから野生の動物相を守ることを目的とした新しい試みだという。 小型肉食動物であるフクロネコの脅威となっているのは、1935年に中南米から導入された外来種の大ヒキガエル。毒性が強く、それを食べようとした肉食動物は死ぬ可能性がある。オーストラリア北部で1年に推定40～60キロのペースで生息範囲を拡大し、その数は2億匹を突破。その結果、固有種の肉食動物の個体数が激減する事態となった。 現在、政府が資金を拠出す
