イギリスの記者がカカオ豆の買い付け人に扮し、欧州の大手メーカーが原料を調達しているガーナの農園に潜入してみると、大勢の学童期の子どもが収穫のため働いている。従業員の家族が手伝っているのだと説明を受けるが、ガーナの公用語の英語が通じず、フランス語なら理解する12歳の少年と出会う。隣国ブルキナファソの農村から売られてきて一年になるが、賃金をもらったことはなく、学校にも通っていないと身の上を話す。 児童労働が行われている農園でとれたカカオを入手した記者が、港にある卸業者を訪れると、何も問われず簡単に買い取ってもらえる。大量の袋の山にいったん紛れ込んでしまうと、再び選り分けて取り出すのは不可能だ。 これに対し、イギリスではいま、不法な児童労働がないように管理され、フェアトレード（公正貿易）の認定を受けた農園の原料だけを使ったチョコレートが、割高ながら売れ行きを伸ばしている。しかし現地で記者が潜入調
