FundRef―その研究助成はどのような研究成果を生んだのか？ 2013年の世界における研究開発投資総額は前年より3.7％増加しておよそ1.5兆ドルに達すると予測した調査がある。不況にあえぐ米国や欧州では低下するものの，中国などの急成長国では激増が見込まれるためだという。 しかしながら，官民を問わず，こういった世界中の助成機関による投資によってどのような研究成果が生まれたのかを追跡することは，現在は一般的に困難である。研究成果の代表とされる査読論文は通常，メタデータに助成機関名称や助成番号が含まれておらず，また含まれていたとしても名称の記述が標準化されているとは限らないからである。そのため助成機関は自らの投資効果を容易に評価することができない。また出版社にとっては自社の出版物が，研究機関にとっては所属研究者の研究成果が，どのような機関から多く助成を得ているのかを把握できないという状況にある
