Hardware Steel ball + Arduino + hacks = amazing Katamari Damacy controller Why this hasn’t been done before is a mystery to me. This little hack project by Kellbot of NYCResistor takes a rolling ball, an optical mouse, a gutted PS2 controller, and some Arduino hacking and makes it into a working (and awesome) virtual Katamari. Why didn’t they have special controllers like this that came with the g
Feel Like Shaking A Baby To Death? There's An App For That. Okay, this is just beyond ridiculous and a bit horrifying. In Apple’s App Store right now is Baby Shaker, a new app which, displays a picture of a baby and plays crying sounds. To make it stop, you have to shake your iPhone really hard, after which the crying will stop and two X’s will be placed over the baby’s eyes — implying, of course,
What if you could peer into the thoughts of millions of people as they were thinking those thoughts or shortly thereafter? And what if all of these thoughts were immediately available in a database that could be mined easily to tell you what people both individually and in aggregate are thinking right now about any imaginable subject or event? Well, then you’d have a different kind of search engin
Today at Microsoft’s Mix conference for developers, which Duncan just finished liveblogging, chief software architect Ray Ozzie hinted at a new service Microsoft is about to preview that will be called Mesh. It sounds like cloud computing for the masses—an ambitious platform that will attempt to unite Web applications across all of your devices, from multiple PCs to cell phones. I got my hands on
Sometimes it’s hard to remember which video you have seen, left a comment on, rated, or who recommended it to you. And it’s getting harder to cut the noise in the heavily crowded online video space (YouTube users alone are uploading 15 hours of new content every 60 seconds). This is where Mitter, a service provided by Tokyo-based Metacast comes in (the site is available in English). Mitter wants t
Tagging The Real World: Sekai Camera For The iPhone Is Alive And Very Cool A total of 52 companies launched at last year’s TechCrunch50 conference. Five of them got jury selection prizes, there was one big winner and a very special crowd pleaser: Japan-based Tonchidot’s Sekai Camera, an iPhone app that presents tagged information in the form of a graphical layer over images in the iPhone camera. C
Picture credit: Umihiko Namekawa (more photos from the event can be found here and here) Our first TechCrunch/CrunchGear meetup in Tokyo (TechCrunch Japan is one of Japan’s main blogs) yesterday night was a blast. Peter Ha was in town and over 100 people attended the event on very short notice, including representatives from Yahoo Japan, telecommunications giants KDDI and NTT, Opera, MySpace Japan
As announced yesterday, Peter Ha is currently in Japan and we are very impressed with the response to the CrunchGear/TechCrunch meetup idea in Tokyo so far. The meetup will take place tomorrow, February 3. Please make sure to email me (serkan at techcrunch com) if you want to join. If more people than announced come (which is very likely), we need to improvise heavily – I made a reservation for 50
Ba Da Da Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding. Greetings from the Land of the Rising Sun, Hello Kitty, Ninjas and all sorts of sexual fetishes. Serkan and I are talking about having a meetup here in Tokyo on Tuesday night. Please drop a line in comments or e-mail me at peterha at crunchgear dot com and let us know if you’d like to join. I’m staying in Ebisu and plan to have the meetup around here or wherever
You may not know it, but you probably have an OpenID. If you have a Yahoo account, you have an OpenID. If you have a Windows Live account, you will soon have an OpenID. And today, if you have a Google e-mail account, you can also start using your Gmail address as an OpenID. By joining the OpenID movement, Google completes the trifecta and adds all of its Gmail users to the hundreds of millions of
In Japan, girls are crazy over virtual boyfriends. Webkare (Web Boyfriend in Japanese), a mix between a social network and dating simulation site, is Nippon’s newest web sensation. Geared exclusively towards girls, the site attracted over 10,000 members just 5 days after its release on September 10, racking up 3.5 million page views in the same time frame. The site is a huge hit over here. Girls s
Sekai Camera (World Camera in Japanese) is an iPhone-exclusive social tagging service developed by Tokyo-based mobile application provider Tonchidot. The company’s TechCrunch50 presentation (and following Q&A) was pretty hard to understand because of the language barrier but Sekai Camera turned out to be a crowd-pleaser nonetheless. The key idea is to use the iPhone as a mobile information termina
This system, by students at the University of Washington, uses still photographs or one single frame of a video scene to automatically improve video. The improvements are amazing. Video might contain artifacts like overexposure and low-resolution imagery and this system takes cues from still images of the scene to bring almost the entire video up to photographic quality. Can’t wait for this to hit
