「アリに学べ!ロボットの集団行動最適化プロジェクト」は、ロボット工学や情報工学、数理生態学など、さまざまな分野を専門とする研究者で取り組む異分野連携型のプロジェクトである。しかし、異分野連携型と言っても、実際どのような連携が行われているかをイメージすることは難しい。今回、プロジェクトのメンバーであり、進化生物学を専門とする京都大学・土畑重人博士に、ご自身の研究内容と異分野連携のメリットについて、詳しくご紹介いただいた。 ーはじめに、土畑先生の専門分野についてご紹介ください。 私の専門は、進化生物学です。たとえば、丸い形をしていたほうが、四角い形をしているよりも生き残る確率の高い生物がいるとしましょう。するとその生物では、世代交代のたびに丸い形が増えることになるので、最終的にはみんな丸い形をするようになるはずです。このように、環境に最も上手く適応できた生物の性質が引き継がれていく考えかたのこ
NASA(アメリカ航空宇宙局)と聞くだけで、胸がときめく。 1960年代生まれのぼくは、かろうじてアポロの月着陸を覚えている。幼い頃の記憶だから、曖昧模糊としているのだが、夜空に浮かぶあの「お月さま」に、今この瞬間、人がいるんだと思うとすごく不思議な感じがした。 1976年に火星に着陸したバイキング1号、2号の時には、ちょうど小学校6年生だった。夏休みから二学期にかけて続々と入る火星のニュースにやはり胸をときめかせた。その後、一大テーマであった火星の生物の検出はできず、落胆したのもはっきり覚えている。 バイキング1号と2号はこの着陸機(ランダー)を無事火星に送り届けた。写真はJPLの実験場「マーズヤード」の試作機。(Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona)

UI研究者 増井俊之 1959年生まれ。54歳。慶應義塾大学環境情報学部教授。東京大学大学院修士課程卒業後、富士通、シャープ、ソニーコンピュータサイエンス研究所、産業技術総合研究所を経て、2006年から2008年まで米AppleでiPhoneの日本語入力方式の開発に従事。2008年より慶應義塾大学。 慶應義塾大学SFC(湘南藤沢キャンパス)にある増井俊之の研究室は、混沌とした楽しさが感じられる場だった。まず、ドアの開閉の方法からして違う。「NFC対応のスマートフォンをかざして回す」操作で解錠する仕組みが作り込まれている。ドア解錠の機構から伸びるケーブルの先には、ガジェット作りでは定番のマイコンボード「Arduino」がある。ユーザインタフェース研究者である増井の研究成果をドア解錠の機構に組み込んでいるのだ。 研究室の入り口には、研究室メンバーが「ニコニコ学会」で大賞を獲得したときの副賞のだ
