You’ve probably heard of WebAssembly and why it’s a powerful tool in the browser. In this article, Robert Aboukhalil will explore why serverless WebAssembly might be equally powerful outside the browser, and how to get started using it. Certain types of applications — such as data analysis and image processing, to name a few — can greatly benefit from such an approach. Though the runtime suffers b
It can be difficult to disassociate the idea that dynamically typed programming languages are tied to byte-code interpreters (e.g. YARV Ruby, CPython, V8, Zend Engine, etc.). But for many languages, a compiled implementation also exists. Cython, Chicken Scheme and SBCL are good examples. In this post I will briefly describe how I built a compiler for my Scheme implementation using artifacts from t
Every six weeks, we create a new branch of V8 as part of our release process. Each version is branched from V8’s Git master immediately before a Chrome Beta milestone. Today we’re pleased to announce our newest branch, V8 version 6.8, which is in beta until its release in coordination with Chrome 68 Stable in several weeks. V8 v6.8 is filled with all sorts of developer-facing goodies. This post pr
March 23, 2018 by Peng Lyu, @njukidreborn The Visual Studio Code 1.21 release includes a brand new text buffer implementation which is much more performant, both in terms of speed and memory usage. In this blog post, I'd like to tell the story of how we selected and designed the data structures and algorithms that led to those improvements. Performance discussions about JavaScript programs usually
This is post # 6 of the series dedicated to exploring JavaScript and its building components. In the process of identifying and describing the core elements, we also share some rules of thumb we use when building SessionStack, a JavaScript tool for developers to identify, visualize, and reproduce web app bugs through pixel-perfect session replay. If you missed the previous chapters, you can find t

In this blog post we would like to explain how V8 handles JavaScript properties internally. From a JavaScript point of view there are only a few distinctions necessary for properties. JavaScript objects mostly behave like dictionaries, with string keys and arbitrary objects as values. The specification does however treat integer-indexed properties and other properties differently during iteration.

For over two years the WebAssembly W3C Community Group has served as a forum for browser vendors and others to come together to develop an elegant and efficient compilation target for the Web.
