週末から、このニュースに釘づけ。チュニジアで起きた政変をきっかけに、民主化を求めるデモや暴動がエジプトに波及している。暴徒の襲撃を怖れて扉を閉じている商店もあるようだ。カイロの証券取引所が取引を停止したとか、取り付け騒ぎを怖れる銀行、郵便局が窓口を閉じているとも伝えられている。エジプトは中東の要とも言われるところだけに、とくに注目度は高い。なにしろ中東地域には、独裁政権、王政の国が多い。ムバラク政権が転覆すると、民主化のうねりは勢いを得て、中東全体に拡散して液状化しかねない、ということなんだろうね。 英米の支援と軍部を背景にしたムバラク政権下のエジプトは、長期にわたる独裁政権の例にもれず、貧富の格差が拡大し、縁故主義がはびこり、民衆の間に強い不満が溜まっていたようだ。日経新聞によれば、国民の4割が1日2ドル以下で生活しているんだとか。なかでも気にかかる点は、同国の人口構造は、高齢化が進む日
