先週から人の親になった。親になった気分に戸惑う間もなく、私の子供を産んだ人が産んだ数日後に蜘蛛膜下出血で意識不明になり、ICU送りになった。異常を発見し、医師を呼び、救急車で搬送される人事不肖の人を見送り、タクシーを待って茫然としているときに看護婦が声をかけて抱きしめてくれた。涙が溢れて止まらなかった。産院と大学病院の神経外科の間をいったりきたりしながら経過を逐次追い、いくつものパラメータが表示されるLCDをにらみ、数日の間にさまざまな情報を読んでずいぶんとこの病気について詳しくなった。オシメ換えも寝不足で意識が朦朧としていてもこなせるようになった。口をパクパクさせる赤ん坊を眺め、これじゃミルク飲みすぎだよ、と思っておしゃぶりをくわえさせると、ニ三度吸ったあとにぽいっと口から吐き出す。そのたびにやっぱりおっぱいじゃないとダメなのかな、と情けない気分になる。途方にくれる。
