こくら日記 - 悲劇の島エロマンガ
■エロマンガ島、健康な中学生時代をおくった日本人男性であればだれしも一度は地図帳の中にその島を発見し、ささやかな期待としかし現実にはありえないはずの風景を夢想した経験があるだろう。最近の地図帳にはイロマンゴ島と書かれているらしいが、現地の発音にもっとも近い表記はエロマンゴ島である。 ■エロマンガ島はバヌアツ南部のタフェア島嶼群のひとつであり、面積は９７５平方キロメートル、８００メートルを越えるピークを持つ火山性の島である。 ■しかしエロマンガ島はその蠱惑的な名前のイメージとは裏腹に悲劇の歴史を背負った島であった。 ■空から見るエロマンガ島は、まばらな森と草原が広がっている。集落はほとんど見られない。草原は柵でかこわれ、その中で牛たちが草を食んでいる。島には８人乗りの軽飛行機がかよっているが、観光客はおろか人類学者すらほとんど訪れない。行くのが大変だからではなく、行っても何もないからだ。 ■
