米国では、2003年から夜間の協同バーチャルレファレンス(異なる図書館のスタッフが連携を取り合ってオンラインでレファレンスを行う)“Night Owl(夜のフクロウ)”を行っていたデューク大学、ノースカロライナ州立大学、ノースカロライナ大学チャペル・ヒル校の各図書館が中心となって開発された、オープンソースソフトウェアを活用し、インスタント・メッセンジャー(IM)対応機能と、ウェブでのチャット機能の両方を備えたバーチャルレファレンス用システム“LibraryH3lp”を導入する大学図書館が増えているそうです。このLibraryH3lpについて紹介する記事が、Code4lib Journal誌に掲載されています。 Pam Sessoms; Eric Sessoms. アメリカのインディアナ州にあるボール州立大学図書館が、同大学が所有しているテキストデータや写真、音楽、映像などの資料を仮想世界のユーザーも自由に閲覧できるよう、セカンドライフ内に図書館を作ることを計画している。 同大学のアーサー・ハーフナー学部長は、6月にセカンドライフ上に図書館を作る研究グループを発足。セカンドライフに提供できる図書館サービスについて現在研究しているとのこと。 また、同大学は既にミドルタウン研究センターの「ミドルタウンプロジェクト」と共同で仮想アーカイブ構築の研究を行っている。 現在、同大学はこの”仮想図書館”プロジェクトに協力してくれる学生や教授陣を募集しているという。 ボール州立大学図書館 http://www.bsu.edu/library/
サンフランシスコ発--あと数年間で大学教育はどのように姿を変えるのだろうか。その答えは、米国最大の4年制総合大学群を有する、カリフォルニア州立大学(CSU)が持っているかもしれない。 同大学群は、23のキャンパス、4万6000人のスタッフ、40万人以上の学生で構成されている。その最高責任者であるCharles Reed氏は、将来的な教室スペースの確保に懸念を感じていると言う。その理由は主に、増え続ける入学者数だ。 Reed氏は語る。「したがって、これからは在宅型の学生が増えていくと思う」。すなわち学生たちは、キャンパスで教職員やクラスメートと顔を合わせるのは週に1度で、週の残りの日はシミュレーション、仮想世界、ダウンロードした情報を使って、履修した授業をこなしていくようになるのだ。 米国時間2月6日にサンフランシスコで開催された「Worldwide Education and Resear
