宮内庁が、皇族女子による「女性宮家」創設の検討を「火急の案件」として野田首相に要請したことがわかった。 併せて安定的な皇位継承制度の実現も求めている。皇室典範は、女性皇族について、一般の人との結婚などにより皇族の身分を離れるとしており、女性宮家創設にあたっては、宮家の当主となる女性皇族が結婚後も皇族の身分を保つよう、典範の一部を改正することになる。 現在の皇室の構成は、天皇陛下と皇族方２２人。男性皇族方７人のうち４人は６０歳を超えている。また、未婚の皇族女子は、天皇陛下の孫では皇太子ご夫妻の長女、愛子さま（９）、秋篠宮ご夫妻の長女、眞子さま（２０）、次女の佳子さま（１６）の３人、昭和天皇の弟の三笠宮さまの孫にあたる彬子(あきこ)さま（２９）ら５人、合わせて８人で、うち６人が成人されている。 宮内庁側は、今後、結婚により女性皇族が皇籍を離れるなどして皇族方が少数になると皇室全体の活動に支障が
