Jupyter Notebooks has been the significant player in the interactive development space for many years, and Notebooks have played a vital role in the continued popularity of languages like Python, R, Julia, and Scala. Interactive experiences like this give users with a lightweight tool (I like to say "interactive paper") for learning, iterative development, and data science and data manipulation. T
There's some interesting stuff quietly happening in the "Console App" world within open source .NET Core right now. Within the https://github.com/dotnet/command-line-api repository are three packages: System.CommandLine.Experimental System.CommandLine.DragonFruit System.CommandLine.Rendering These are interesting experiments and directions that are exploring how to make Console apps easier to writ
If you find yourself learning C# and .NET and come upon the "Run your first C# Program" documentation you may have noticed a "Try the code in your browser" button that lets you work through your first app entirely online, with no local installation! You're running C# and .NET in the browser! It's a great way to learn that is familiar to folks who learn JavaScript. The language team at Microsoft wa
MSBuild has been open source for a while (over a year now!) and is used to build .NET and .NET Core projects. In fact, MSBuild is used to build the .NET Core Runtime itself. Recently Kirill Osenkov published a new tool called MSBuild Structured Log that makes it easy to visualize your builds and the build process. Install and run MSBuild Structured Log from here. It is an MSBuild logger that can b
The .NET Core and the Core Libraries are open source and run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. In fact, you can run them with support, today, in production on Windows and Linux (Mac is for development, not production). Head over to http://get.asp.net to get ASP.NET 5 with .NET Core on any platform. Also get the free cross platform editor Visual Studio Code as well. Because .NET Core runs anywhere, there
If you right click in Windows and try to make a new text file with a . period/dot in front of it: Name the file...something like .gitignore, for example. You'll get the "You must type a file name" error. But, rather than typing .gitignore, if you include an ending dot also, like .gitignore. Then it works fine. Thanks, Mads, for the tip! NOTE: We're assuming that you have "File name extensions" tur
Last year, about this time, a bunch of us sat down in a studio to give a full day of tutorials and discussion on "Building Web Apps with ASP.NET." All those videos are online and have lots of good content like: 1: What's New in ASP.NET 4.5 2: Building and Deploying Websites with ASP.NET MVC 4 3: Creating HTML5 Applications with jQuery 4: Building a Service Layer with ASP.NET Web API 5: Leveraging
About a year ago we thought it would be a good idea to do a talk on "What not to do in ASP.NET?" - basically an anti-patterns talks. We kept seeing folks falling into the same traps and wanted to be prescriptive as there's aspects to ASP.NET that are 10 years old and don't apply to today's internet, but there are also new aspects to ASP.NET that are only a year old, and perhaps haven't soaked into
Just when you thought it couldn't be crazier in Redmond, today they are introducing node.js Tools for Visual Studio! NTVS runs inside VS2012 or VS2013. Some node.js enthusiasts had forked PTVS and begun some spikes of node tools for VS. At the same time the PTVS team was also working on node.js integration, so they all joined forces and made NTVS a community project. NTVS was developed by the same
