将棋の谷川浩司九段（５１）が、名人挑戦権を争うトップ棋士１０人のリーグ戦「Ａ級順位戦」から陥落することが１１日未明、決まった。名人在位を含むＡ級在籍連続３２期は、故・大山康晴十五世名人の４４期に次ぐ歴代２位。輝かしい成績で永世名人の資格も手にしたスター棋士が、ひとまず大舞台を降りる。 Ａ級からＣ級２組まで５クラスある順位戦。頂点の名人から連なる棋士の「順位」を決め、クラスは棋士の「格」を表す。最上位のＡ級に在籍することは一流棋士の証しだ。 １０人で戦うＡ級は、優勝者が名人に挑戦し、下位２人がＢ級１組の上位２人と入れ替わる仕組み。同じ成績なら、前期の成績を元に決まる「順位」が下の棋士から陥落する。
