Iraq to reinstate 20,000 Saddam-era army officers
The Iraqi military will reinstate 20,000 Saddam Hussein-era army officers who were dismissed from their posts after the 2003 US-led invasion for serving under the former dictator, an Iraqi defence spokesman said today. The announcement, a little over a week before the 7 March parliamentary elections, raised questions about whether it was timed to win votes for the prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki.
