赤い風船の位置を突き止めたのはMIT--「DARPA Network Challenge」優勝者が発表に
米国防高等研究計画局（DARPA）は米国時間12月5日、マサチューセッツ工科大（MIT）が「DARPA Network Challenge」コンテストに優勝し、賞金4万ドルを獲得したことを発表した。同コンテストは、5日に開催され、参加者は、米国中に散らばった10個の赤い風船の緯度および経度をその日のうちに突き止めることが求められた。MITは、唯一かつ最初にすべての風船の位置を突き止めたチームとなった。要した時間は9時間未満であった。DARPAは、インターネットの40周年を記念して同コンテストを企画し、大掛かりな問題や課題に取り組む際にソーシャルネットワーキングがどのように使用できるか調査することを目的としていた。
